Casting

Whilst first attempting to cast your fly rod, you’ll want to do so without any flies tied to your leader or tippet.  The reason for this is that almost all the time, we’re using the weight of the fly line to cast with rather than the flies themselves.  There are caveats here, but I’ll go into those later.  When you cast, you’re line is going to look about like the photo below…  well, that’s what it will look like with some practice.

Because what follows is difficult to digest with illustrations and accompanying text, here’s a video that demonstrate the basics. It’s not a short video, but it’s a great view and covers two types of casts, enough to get you out on the water and casting with confidence!
