Putting It All Together

So now that you have a fly rod, and a wound reel sitting in front of you, what now?

Although this is fairly elementary, there are some potential gotchas to avoid:

  1. When you put your rod together, make sure the “guides” line up
  2. When you pull your line through the guides, make sure you don’t miss any
  3. Make sure you put your reel on the right way.  A right handed person will cast with their right arm, and thus retrieve line by reeling with their left hand.  A lefty casts with his or her left hand and retrieves with his right hand.
