Why You Should Hire a Guide

A friend of mine asked me the other day, “Why should I hire a guide? After all, I can just go fish and figure it out on my own.” And he’s right, except he never catches more than a couple little fish every time he sets out for a day on the stream, which is why I’m writing this.

Do I get a guide every time I go fishing? No, of course not, and I never did, even before I began guiding clients. I will say that my knowledge of the sport, the fish, and the area I’m fishing have all greatly improved as a result of hiring guides in the past. I still go on guided trips at least 5 times every year for several reasons…

So, Why should YOU hire a guide? Here’s why:

  • A good guide knows the area, and the water, and the fish better than you do.
  • A good guide knows where the best fishing will be on the day you’re to fish.
  • A good guide has access to private water that you didn’t know even existed.
  • A good guide will make sure you catch fish, AND have a great time doing so.
  • A good guide will watch you cast, and offer you advice on how you can improve.
  • A good guide will net your fish, and untangle your knots.
  • A good guide will explain to you what the fish are eating based on the time of season.
  • A good guide will pack your lunch and fill up your water bottle when it’s empty.
  • A good guide will row the boat up and down the river in pursuit of the best fish.

I could go on and on about this topic, but I think the above list pretty well covers it.

Now, not every guide is good. I’ve had my fair share of lousy guides, I’ll admit it. You want to choose a guide who has a lot of experience guiding people of your skill level, in the area you want to fish, and ideally one that has guided someone you know well who speaks highly of him or her so that you can hire that guide with confidence.

Remember, it’s all about having fun first and foremost. Catching trout is second. Because let’s face it… if the guide is an A-hole, he or she is ruining any fun you’re going to have catching trout because you’re going to be stuck with them for a whole day.
